How to use this desk
- Name the meaning. Say whether the phrase means a thermodynamic state function, a harvested ambient flow, or a closed over-unity machine.
- Open the folder. Bring one specimen to the blotter. Read the stamp before the story: documented test, incomplete cycle, patent document, category error, real effect, or documented term.
- Separate theory, evidence, and folklore. Theory is the mechanism offered. Evidence is what a cited NASA, NIST, USPTO, DOE, or EIA record can carry. Folklore is the leap that travels in videos and forums.

Category error
Folder 2. Heat-pump COP above 1 is not over-unity
A heat pump can deliver more heat to a building than the electrical energy it consumes. That fact is then offered as proof that over-unity machines already exist.
Theory offered. COP greater than 1 means the appliance creates energy.
What the record can carry. DOE heat-pump guidance explains the extra heat: the cycle moves environmental heat from outdoor air, water, or ground into the conditioned space. The correct boundary includes that environmental input. NASA’s first-law statement still holds: energy is neither created nor destroyed.
Folklore that travels. If an HVAC unit can have COP 3, a sealed magnet motor can have COP 3.
What this archive can stand behind. COP above 1 can be normal when the boundary counts moved heat. Calling that free-energy creation is a category error. Heat pumps belong with legitimate research, not perpetual motion.

Documented test
Folder 3. Joseph Newman's energy machine
A closed electromagnetic machine was claimed to deliver more usable output than all counted electrical input. The claim entered a patent dispute and a public test.
Theory offered. Coil and magnet geometry can produce net electrical work without an uncounted source.
What the record can carry. The National Bureau of Standards, now NIST, published a test report for the patent dispute. The report did not find output energy greater than input energy under the published plan, instruments, and calibration.
Folklore that travels. The patent fight itself is treated as proof the machine worked, or as proof a conspiracy suppressed it.
What this archive can stand behind. The NIST publication exists and reports a negative energy-balance result. It is a measurement case study, not a demolition of every later claim, and it is not a schematic for rebuilding the apparatus.

Incomplete cycle
Folder 4. Permanent-magnet motor claims
Permanent magnets, gates, or shielding are said to keep a rotor turning under load without a prime mover.
Theory offered. Magnetic asymmetry can supply continuous work because magnets “do not run out.”
What the record can carry. EIA’s magnets-and-electricity explainer is blunt: generators convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. Magnets shape the field. They are not the energy source. A one-way snap, latch, or downhill path is not an engine until reset work is counted.
Folklore that travels. A spinning magnet disk on video is treated as a net-energy result.
What this archive can stand behind. Magnets are components in ordinary motors and generators. Public magnet-motor claims typically lack torque-speed data, measured load, control-coil input, and a closed cycle. This desk will not publish a rotor geometry to copy.

Folder 5. Stanley Meyer water-fuel cell
Water is split into a combustible gas with unusually low electrical input, then offered as a vehicle fuel.
Theory offered. A resonant water cell can produce hydrogen-oxygen gas as a net energy source.
What the record can carry. U.S. patent US4936961A documents a claimed method for producing a fuel gas. DOE hydrogen pages state the thermodynamic point that survives the patent: hydrogen is an energy carrier, and electrolysis requires energy input. Water is feedstock, not a surplus.
Folklore that travels. “It has a patent, therefore a car can run on water.”
What this archive can stand behind. The patent is a claim document. It is not an independent energy balance. This archive will not give electrolyzer wiring, resonant-drive settings, or a water-fuel build list.

Real effect, unsupported harvest
Folder 6. Casimir force versus a vacuum generator
Quantum vacuum fluctuations or the Casimir effect are presented as a harvestable power source.
Theory offered. If empty space is not empty, a bench device can extract net work from the vacuum.
What the record can carry. NIST has reported on the Casimir effect and engineered nanostructures that influence vacuum-fluctuation forces. That is laboratory physics at nanoscale. A measured force is not a resettable engine. Separating attracted plates costs work; a cycle has to pay that cost.
Folklore that travels. Cosmological dark-energy headlines are blended with a kit you can order.
What this archive can stand behind. The Casimir effect is real. The leap to a practical free-energy generator is not established here. This desk does not describe how to build a vacuum extractor.

Legal record, not a lab
Folder 7. A patent is not a net-energy result
An issued U.S. patent is offered as the main evidence that an over-unity or perpetual-motion device works.
Theory offered. Examiners would not grant the patent unless the invention performed as claimed.
What the record can carry. MPEP 2107 requires utility that is specific, substantial, and credible. MPEP 608.03 notes that working models may be requested, including in perpetual-motion situations. Those are patent-law screens. They are not independent calorimetry, raw data, or multi-lab replication.
Folklore that travels. “They wouldn’t issue it if it didn’t work.”
What this archive can stand behind. A patent can be a first-rate historical document. It documents a claim and a disclosure. It does not, by itself, validate net energy. Read the claims, then ask for a test.

Does a patent prove a free-energy device works?
No. USPTO utility guidance and model rules are patent-law screens. A patent can document a claim. Independent net-energy proof still requires a complete, replicated test.
Why can a heat pump have COP greater than 1?
Because it moves environmental heat. The extra heat is an input crossing the boundary, not energy created inside an isolated box.
What evidence would change the over-unity conversation?
Independent replication with a complete boundary, calibrated instruments, raw data, unchanged stored-energy state, and a surplus larger than the uncertainty budget.
